Most artists who appeal to adult listeners tend to settle into a
comfortable niche, but Lucinda Williams refuses to play it safe.
Instead, her music stings like an open wound, as she continues to strip
away the protective layers from her art's emotional core. Though
Williams has long been prized for the naked honesty of her music, this
collection is even rawer than its predecessors. From the down-and-dirty
bar-band blues of "Atonement" to the Rolling Stones-style swagger of
"Bleeding Fingers" to the tricky balance of debasement and
transcendence in "Ventura," Williams leaves the nerve endings of her
music exposed. |

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond
her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often
found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending
intimations of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like
anyone but herself. Anyway you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned
with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic, "Cold Cold Heart" and
Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of
the CD. |

The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making,
but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was
to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of
course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are
bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the
casting is simply inspired. |

To call Celine Dion predictable would be too easy--other divas should
be so lucky to still be walking her platinum path. As Whitney Houston
and Mariah Carey struggle to update their sounds without losing their
core following, Celine keeps on delivering power ballads and
inspirational pop without ever losing her footing. |

2003 follow-up to the eight-times-platinum in the US debut, Hybrid
Theory, promises to be one of the biggest albums of the year. Enhanced
CD packaged in a digipak. |
